Diaphragm seal instrumentation equipment

Diaphragm seals in pressure equipment make measurements safer and more reliable. It is also used to protect pressure gauges and process transmitters, even under extreme operating conditions.

The principle of Diaphragm seal and when to use them

There is usually no problem when the process path is connected directly to the compression tool. However, water and harsh environments can damage the device’s internal components. In these cases, a Diaphragm seal can make the difference between reliable and unreliable readings. The purpose of the Diaphragm seal is to isolate the pressure measuring device from the process environment. It is often used for difficult measurement tasks when the environment is very hot or cold or when the process connection is difficult to connect to the measuring device. Diaphragm seals are used when the measured medium is corrosive, sticky, sticky, or easily damaged, or is chemically incompatible with the process tool materials, such as in sanitary and food processing where frequent cleaning of the diaphragms is required.

What is a Diaphragm seal?

A diaphragm seal, usually attached to a pressure gauge, transmitter, or pressure switch, is a thin, flexible wall that separates the medium being measured from the pressure measuring device.

The space between the diaphragm and the measuring instrument is filled with the system fluid. (transfer fluid) which transmits hydraulic pressure from a flexible diaphragm. The contact area between the manometer and the diaphragm is relatively large, which provides more accurate pressure measurement – Especially at very low pressures (<600 mbar), the advantages of using a Diaphragm seal to prevent direct contact of the measured environment with the pressure measuring equipment are listed below:

  • Clogging and crystallization are measured in the instrument.
  • Reduces corrosion.
  • Protects the sensitive element from extreme temperatures.

When using a Diaphragm seal, the instrument can be used at temperatures from -130 to +750°F (-90 to +399°C) and with aggressive, corrosive, heterogeneous, abrasive, highly viscous or toxic media. Diaphragm packing designs, materials, and fluids are available for many industrial applications such as bioethanol production, fertilizer production, and wastewater filtration.

Why are diaphragm seals used?

Diaphragm seals, if properly repaired, protect the system but are less effective. In this way, diaphragm seals extend the life of pressure measuring instruments and save users time and money in the long run. Diaphragm seals also allow pressure ports to be installed through custom capillary tubing for your unique application. And thanks to the wide selection of process connections available (flange, threaded, etc.) they can meet many industry standards.

Large companies that develop diaphragm coupling services are usually precision equipment manufacturers that offer a variety of services to customers. However, in many cases, due to the unavailability of these companies and the high cost of ordering these systems, few calibration centers offer these services to their customers. So that all types of membranes can be connected and used with a wide range of precision instruments.
